Jason Powell (MSc by Research)
Jason completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry in 2019 at the University of Southampton, which included core modules from both the Chemistry and Biochemistry courses. He then went on to study a master’s degree in Chemistry by Research with the supervisor Dr. Matthias Baud.
Jason’s research is focused on design and synthesis of small molecules that can interact with and stabilise misfolded p53 with the Y220C mutation, which turns the 220th tyrosine residue to a much smaller cysteine. He is specifically working on optimising a very promising series of compounds to try and increase the melting point of the mutant, whilst testing efficacy of these compounds by melting point analysis (DSF) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC).
