Dr. Joseph Stephenson Clarke
J.R.Stephenson-Clarke@soton.ac.uk

Joe obtained his MChem from the University of Reading, where he was awarded the Paul Holt prize for top student in Organic Chemistry 2017. In his final year he worked under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Russell on a methodology development project centred on a new reagent for use in the Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement.

Joe’s research focussed on the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel small-molecule stabilisers of thermolabile disease-associated mutant proteins (p53, FGE). This involved target design and selection using rational drug design and in in-silico studies, chemical synthesis of targeted small-molecule libraries and evaluation of structure-activity relationships using biophysical techniques (DSF, NMR, ITC, XRD).
